Waltz, 2009, oil on canvas, 72 x 56"
With Musing, Barbara Sternberger turns her gaze away from the study of stillness, toward the experience of motion and the ever-changing possibilities contained within it. Sternberger does not pre-plan her paintings, instead the content of the painting is revealed as she creates it. The works are self-generating, and gradually evolve, not impacted by the external world of objects, or by the desire to depict a “thing.” The pieces refer to something familiar, but are inexact. They are not replicas of reality, but offer some whiff of shared knowledge or experience. Relating to the experience of hearing music, movement can drive the viewer’s experience of the piece, guiding them through color and form, giving equal importance to both what is seen, and how it is perceived.
